[Plant height and tiller population density in Panicum maximum genotypes in semiarid region]. Abstract: The aim of this work is to evaluate plant height in Panicum maximum genotypes developed in the semiarid region in order to enhance knowledge and understanding for future breeding programs of the species. The work was carried out in an experimental area of Embrapa Caprinos e Ovinos, located in Sobral - Ceará, Brazil. It consisted of 24 treatments distributed in plots of 4 rows of 2 m length, spaced 0.5 m apart, in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Plant height (ALT) and tiller population density (DPP) were evaluated. A highly significant difference (p <0.001) among treatments was identified for ALT. The highest genotypes were CO-3 and CO-4, with a mean heights of 98.86 and 97.40 cm, respectively, which were significantly higher than the Massai cultivar, which presented a mean of 57.23 cm. The CO-7 treatment showed the lowest height among the evaluated genotypes, with a mean of 39.30 cm. A highly significant difference (p <0.001) was also identified for DPP among all treatments. The genotypes with the highest DDP were the control cultivar (Massai) and CO-1, with a mean of 1114.56 and 858.58 perf/m2, respectively. Therefore, it was concluded that there is variability among accesses of the Panicum maximum in the germplasm bank for plant height and tiller population density under semiarid climate conditions MenosResumo: Pretende-se com este trabalho ampliar o conhecimento a respeito de genótipos de Panicum maximum no semiárido, avaliando acessos em relação à estatura desenvolvida da planta no clima desta região, subsidiando programas de melhoramento da espécie. The present study was carried out to assess the capacity of Morada Nova (MON) and Santa Inês (SIN) hair sheep breeds to maintain homeothermy and its relation with semen quality in a tropical climate. Sixteen rams (MON=7 and SIN=9) were assessed for 12 months. During summer and spring, the Temperature-Humidity Index values surpassed the level indicative of thermal stress, and sweating, respiratory and heart rates increased (P < .05). Those responses allowed animals to dissipate heat, maintain rectal temperature in the physiological range and efficiently avoid thermal stress. Scrotal temperatures rose during summer and spring, but, unlike what occurs in wool breeds of sheep, the thermal gradient between poles of testis increased, which shows efficient compensatory scrotal thermoregulation in both breeds herein studied. Semen quality parameters remained within normal ranges. The high correlation observed between rectal and spermatic funicle temperature gradients with sperm membrane integrity (r=0.62; P < .05) confirmed the importance of systemic and gonadal thermoregulation for the production of ejaculates with highest possible proportion of viable spermatozoa. Thus, MON and SIN rams can be considered resilient to tropical climate since they efficiently perform the thermolysis to face thermal challenges with no negative impact on semen quality throughout the year. Those adaptability characteristics are highly desirable in the genotypes proposed for use in production systems in tropical environments.
